How to make friends and connections as an international student at Rotman Commerce
Starting your studies at Rotman Commerce is a great opportunity to meet new people from all over the world. Whether you’re feeling a bit nervous or eager to jump right in, here are some ways to build friendships and find your crew.
Attend Rotman Commerce Student Life events
Rotman Commerce hosts many social and get-to-know-you events throughout the year.
- Orientation Week: Don’t miss orientation activities—these are designed to help you meet other first-years and learn about campus life.
- Craft Along: Join a Craft Along session hosted by R/C Student Life. You’ll get creative, chat with other students, and take home something you made together!
- Cultural Events: Keep an eye out for cultural celebrations like Diwali, Lunar New Year, or Multicultural Week hosted by R/C Student Life or the Centre for International Education. These events are welcoming spaces to share your own traditions and learn about others.
Keep an eye on RC Portal for student life events happening throughout the year, and check your RC Ready email newsletter for reminders about upcoming R/C events.
Explore Rotman Commerce student groups
Rotman Commerce has a wide range of student clubs where you can meet like-minded people who share your interests in business, culture, sports and so much more.
- Examples include Rotman Commerce Sustainable Business, Rotman Commerce International Business Association, Rotman Commerce Pride Alliance and Rotman Commerce Liquid Assets Dragon Boat Team.
- Groups often host networking nights, speaker panels, case competitions, and social events that bring students together outside of class. Check RC portal for event announcements.
- Many RC groups have admin or leadership positions available through RC Portal. Take the plunge and apply!
- Bonus: Find other U of T clubs across campus! At the start of each semester, U of T’s Students Union hosts a clubs fair as part of orientation. Browse booths, chat with club members, and sign up for mailing lists. It’s one of the easiest ways to meet people who share your interests.
Make connections in class
Feeling nervous about meeting new people? It’s a normal part of everyone’s university experience, and chances are lots of your classmates feel the same way.
- Start small. Say hi to the person sitting next to you before class or ask if they want to form a study group.
- Use group projects to get to know classmates. Exchange info or grab coffee after your meeting.
- Don’t hesitate to attend RC mentorship programs (like Career Peers and First-Year Learning Communities) to connect with first-year and upper-year students.
Everyone at Rotman Commerce is here to learn, grow, and build community. Attend events, join groups or clubs, and be open to the connections that come your way.
