A brief history
Commerce education at the University of Toronto began in 1901 with a diploma program offered by the Faculty of Arts. A Bachelor of Arts in Commerce and Finance followed in 1909, evolving into the Bachelor of Commerce in 1920. From the beginning, the program has combined business education with a strong foundation in the liberal arts—a tradition that continues today.
Graduate studies in commerce led to the establishment of a management school, which became a separate faculty in 1972. In 1997, it was renamed the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management in recognition of its principal benefactor. Despite this growth, the undergraduate commerce program has remained part of the Faculty of Arts & Science, where it continues to thrive.
